Keynote Speaker – Lord Stuart Rose

Stuart Rose has spent his entire career in retail, joining Marks & Spencer plc in 1971, then moving to the Burton Group in 1989, where he became a director in 1993. In 1997 Stuart was Chief Executive of Argos plc, and when Booker plc merged with the Iceland Group in 2000, he continued within the role. He became Chief Executive of Arcadia Group plc in November 2000 and left in December 2002 following its sale to Sir Philip Green. Stuart then re-joined Marks & Spencer plc as Chief Executive in May 2004 becoming Chairman in 2008 and standing down at the end of 2010.

Stuart was Chairman of The British Fashion Council from 2004 - 2008, Chairman of Business in the Community from 2008 - 2010 and a Non-Executive Director of Land Securities from 2003-2013. Stuart is currently Chairman of Bridgepoint portfolio company FatFace, as well as of Majid Al Futtaim Retail and Ocado. He sits as a Non-Executive Director on the board of Woolworths (South Africa) and is currently Chairman of Britain Stronger in Europe campaign.

Stuart Rose was knighted in 2008 for services to the retail industry and corporate social responsibility, and in 2014 was elevated to the House of Lords.

Julia West

Julia is the Operations and HR Manager of Fort Knox Self Storage in Melbourne Australia. Fort Knox Self Storage has 10 Self Storage facilities in Melbourne and a partnership in gobox Mobile Storage.

With 16 years’ experience in the self storage industry, Julia has extensive knowledge of how to build and grow a winning team and how to maximise the most out of the local market. Julia has pioneered numerous community engagement initiatives and enlisted the team to participate in a wide range charitable activities/events which resulted in Fort Knox Self Storage winning the 2018 Self Storage Association of Australasia (SSAA) Industry Award for Community Engagement.

Julia has fostered a culture whereby personal experience and engagement is part of their core values and daily practice. And while Fort Knox’s support of local sporting clubs, schools and charities helps the community, Julia has found that it directly benefits the business by boosting the teams moral, increases brand awareness and increases occupancy for the sites.

Aki Kostiander 

Aki Kostiander, CIO and Head of Real Assets at United Bankers Asset Management Ltd,  Helsinki/Stockholm (MSc Finance from the Hanken School of Economics).

Aki has over 25 years of professional experience from Investing and the asset management industry. He has held many executive level and senior partner positions in more than half a dozen different asset management organizations. He has worked as a Chief Investment Officer and a market strategist as well as been a portfolio manager of several mutual funds. He has covered most types of asset classes during this time but the emphasis has been on global real assets and listed REITs for the last fifteen years. Aki has founded and managed the UB REIT mutual funds since inception. Aki is currently a member of the board at the leading Finnish self storage company Cityvarasto Oyj.

Tanya Michelsen

Tanya leads the brand research team at YouthSight, an award-winning agency specialising in youth research. Her team helps clients understand Millennial and Gen Z audiences, how to target them and what messages resonate with them, with the aim of helping brands grow. She has a strong background in campaign evaluations, ad-testing, brand tracking and ad-hoc research. Clients she has worked with include Facebook, Instagram, The FA, BBC, GlaxoSmithKline, Karma Cola and B&Q.

 

Miranda Brown

Miranda has five years experience in market research, and extensive knowledge across a range of categories and international markets. She has worked with global brands including GSK, Unilever and Nestle. At YouthSight, Miranda leads projects which use both qualitative and quantitative techniques to immerse clients in the world of Gen Z and provide strategic insights to solve business challenges.

 

Christel Land

When completing her MBA in 2008 Christel conducted research on the recessionary effects on the European self-storage market and how companies should adapt their marketing messaging in that environment. She has worked at a store level, local management level (Operations, Marketing) and central management (IT Manager) at City Self-Storage. She is certified in various different coaching techniques, has worked as a full time business coach and currently teaches international coaching certifications. Christel currently works at HiTech Smart Systems as a consultant and project manager
